Puttying brick walls: features, technology and rules

Putty is needed in cases where the brick surface or seams are heavily deformed. Sometimes designers advise leaving chips and cracks on purpose to maintain style, but if you don’t like them, fill them with putty or mortar.

For repairing external walls, choose a gypsum and cement composition or masonry mortar. The main thing is that it should be flexible immediately after production and become harder over time.

Cracks are filled with spatulas: collect the mortar on a wide spatula, put it into the crack with a smaller spatula and remove the excess. During the drying process, the putty will settle a little and the layer will become thinner. Therefore, go over the crack again with a thinner layer of putty to level the surface. After drying, sand with fine-grained sandpaper.

Ready-made construction glue is also used to repair small areas with crumbling mortar inside the premises. Before this, the crumbling mortar is cleaned with a chisel, and then the seam is brushed with a metal brush and water to remove the remaining mortar.

Form the joints of new joints using a spatula or a grout bag – it looks like a pastry bag for decorating cakes and allows you to fill the joints to the desired thickness. Level the finished joints with a mason’s jointer or a narrow spatula.
